Life-or-death emergencies

Expedited or routine service
If your trip is further away than the appointment window, you can apply by mail or at an acceptance facility. Compare the timelines:

- Count the days left until your trip, and check whether you also need a foreign visa.
- Life-or-death emergency involving immediate family abroad? Call the National Passport Information Center now, or the after-hours number outside business hours.
- Within the urgent travel window? Book an appointment at a passport agency or center.
- Not in the window yet? Apply now with expedited service: Form DS-82 by mail if you qualify, or Form DS-11 in person.
- Prepare the right form, one passport photo (see Passport photo requirements) and your documents.
- Pay the government fees for your route (see the table below).
- Track your application and keep your receipt (see Track your passport application).

Only if you meet every requirement below, including the minimum time before your trip. Online renewals cannot be expedited.
Who counts as immediate family in a life-or-death emergency?

No. Passmere is a private company, not a government agency. It prepares your forms from your answers, and you sign and submit them yourself. Only the State Department processes passports, and no one can promise you a date.
